Duties

Reporting to research scientist

1. Lead in day to day management of experiments in the field by

  • Taking multiple experimental protocols and laying the experiments out in the field using GPS equipment
  • Operating, and using field equipment, such as plot seeders, plot harvesting equipment, soil sampling equipment, and plot sprayers
  • Observing, measuring, collecting and recording physical/biological/agronomic data
  • Performing daily regular maintenance on equipment before and after use

2. Assist in data management , protocol development, sample processing and protocol development

  • Help to ensure that collected data is properly stored and maintained
  • Assist scientist with protocol development to ensure that protocols can be feasibly executed in the field
  • Assist with the management of summer students

Intent of the process

Immediat need: 1 full time permanent position.

A pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, he/she may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

A secondary school diploma OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience managing, operating, and using field research equipment (plot seeders, plot harvesting equipment, soil sampling equipment, and plot sprayers).

Experience in observing, measuring, collecting and recording physical/biological/agronomic data.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Pesticide applicator’s license.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

Information on language requirements

Knowledge of the management of agronomic crops and pests.
Knowledge of how to safely operate field equipment.
Knowledge of the concepts of applying pesticides on agronomic crops

Ability to perform mathematical calculations needed to apply pesticides.

The following may be applied / assessed at a later date (may be needed for the job)

Ability to lay out field experiments of factorial and split-plot designs using GPS equipment.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Possession of a valid driver’s licence.
Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise).
Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and pesticides.
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 30kg).
